There’s always a little extra buzz when two playoff teams show up in April hoping to get things clicking. That’s exactly the case this weekend at Fenway Park, where the San Diego Padres and Boston Red Sox meet in a series that could give one club a much-needed spark. SeatGeek, the Official Ticket Marketplace of MLB, is the place for fans looking to be at Fenway Park this weekend for a matchup with some early-season urgency.

In this series, we’ll be keeping an eye on which big-name bats are most likely to heat up and how a strong Friday pitching matchup could set the tone in Boston.

San Diego Padres at Boston Red Sox series preview

Both the Padres and Red Sox entered 2026 on the heels of Wild Card berths in last year’s postseason, and both teams are looking for deeper runs after falling in the first round. Something’s gotta give in this matchup, with the Padres heading to Boston with a 2-4 overall record while the Sox are just 1-5 as they head to Fenway for the first time this season.

Here are the local game times for the series.

Friday, April 3: 2:10 p.m.  Saturday, April 4: 4:10 p.m. Sunday, April 5: 1:35 p.m.

Which lineup will break through?

Neither side has exactly hit the ground running offensively to start the season. The Padres have scored 19 runs in six games and the Red Sox are slightly worse at 17 thus far. San Diego has been a bit better on the pitching side with a 4.00 ERA, while Boston enters the series with a 4.91 team ERA.

Ramon Laureano has given the Padres a jolt with two homers and a wicked 1.199 OPS to date in five games played, but most of the other big bats, such as Fernando Tatis Jr., Jackson Merrill and Xander Bogaerts have really struggled thus far. Boston is in a similar situation where Wilyer Abreu has three homers to date and an OPS of 1.334, but the team really needs more from big bats like Roman Anthony, Jarren Duran and Trevor Story.

Will we see either lineup break through this series in a hitter-friendly ballpark?

Top pitching matchup: Michael King vs. Sonny Gray (Friday)

King didn’t get the Opening Day nod as many – myself included – expected, but he was the best Padres starter out of the gate with five innings of one-hit and one-run ball (unearned) against the Tigers to kick off his 2026 campaign. King made just 15 starts last year after his breakout 2024 campaign, but he has shown he can be as good as anyone in baseball on any given night when he’s healthy and on.

King will be opposed by Gray, as the veteran right-hander is now a member of the Red Sox after spending the last two years in St. Louis. Gray’s Boston tenure didn’t start out on the brightest of notes as he allowed four runs (three earned) in just four innings against the Reds last week. Gray is as solid and consistent as any starter the game has to offer, so a strong bounce-back outing in his first home start at Fenway is hardly out of the realm of possibility.
