The Golden State Warriors, founded in 1946 as the Philadelphia Warriors, have become one of the most successful franchises in NBA history. They won their first championship in 1947, the inaugural season of the Basketball Association of America (BAA), which later merged with the National Basketball League to form the NBA. After relocating to San Francisco in 1962 and eventually becoming the Golden State Warriors in 1971, the team added another title in 1975 with a stunning Finals sweep over the Washington Bullets. The Warriors, known for their fast-paced offense and exciting play, had several ups and downs through the 1980s and 1990s but struggled to find consistent success. However, the team built a strong foundation for the future with the draft selections of stars like Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson in the late 2000s.
The Warriors experienced a historic resurgence starting in the 2014-15 season, winning their first NBA title in 40 years. Under head coach Steve Kerr, the team revolutionized the game with small-ball lineups, three-point shooting, and unselfish ball movement. From 2015 to 2019, Golden State became a dynasty, making five consecutive NBA Finals appearances and winning three championships (2015, 2017, and 2018). The addition of superstar Kevin Durant in 2016 further solidified their dominance. Though injuries and roster changes led to struggles in subsequent seasons, the Warriors returned to glory in 2022, securing another NBA title. Known for their entertaining style of play, record-breaking performances, and strong team culture, the Warriors are regarded as one of the most influential and accomplished teams in modern basketball history

Steve Kerr is the Warriors current head coach. He has had an illustrious career both as a player and a coach, becoming one of the most decorated figures in NBA history. As a player, Kerr won five NBA championships: three with the Chicago Bulls (1996–1998) and two with the San Antonio Spurs (1999, 2003). Known for his sharpshooting, Kerr holds the record for the highest career three-point percentage in NBA history (45.4%). He played a crucial role in the Bulls' second three-peat, notably hitting the championship-winning shot in Game 6 of the 1997 NBA Finals. Kerr's ability to perform under pressure and contribute to championship-winning teams cemented his reputation as one of the league’s best role players.
As a coach, Kerr achieved even greater success, transforming the Golden State Warriors into a basketball powerhouse. Since becoming the Warriors' head coach in 2014, Kerr has led the team to four NBA championships (2015, 2017, 2018, and 2022) and five consecutive Finals appearances from 2015 to 2019. Under his leadership, the Warriors revolutionized the game with their emphasis on three-point shooting, pace, and small-ball lineups. Kerr has been praised for fostering a culture of teamwork and creativity, empowering stars like Stephen Curry, Klay Thompson, and Draymond Green while seamlessly integrating players like Kevin Durant. His coaching philosophy emphasizes ball movement and unselfish play, earning him recognition as one of the most innovative coaches of his generation. In addition to his NBA success, Kerr also coached Team USA to victory at the 2023 FIBA World Cup as an assistant and continues to be a respected figure in basketball both on and off the court.
The Warriors have a number of rivalries in the NBA, including their fellow Pacific Division teams: the Los Angeles Clippers, Los Angeles Lakers, Phoenix Suns and Sacramento Kings. The Kings-Warriors rivalry is a notable one over the years, as is Lakers-Warriors.
As of 2025, the Warriors have won six championships: 1947, 1975, 2015, 2017, 2018 and 2022.
