The best ticket app
Very convenient to sell tickets. SeatGeek provides a recommended price and then lists your tickets as a good or bad deal. Every pair of tickets that I’ve listed has sold quickly and they only charge a 10% fee for the sale, not bad at all.
About George Balanchine's The Nutcracker Tickets
George Balanchine's The Nutcracker is the production that made the ballet an American holiday tradition, and after more than 70 years of annual performances by New York City Ballet, it remains the definitive version of Tchaikovsky's beloved score brought to life. Premiering in 1954 at Lincoln Center, Balanchine's staging transformed what was once a critical curiosity into a cultural institution that now draws over 100,000 audience members each season. The choreography, costumes by the legendary Karinska, and Rouben Ter-Arutunian's enchanting scenery have been preserved with care, ensuring that every performance honors the original vision while captivating new generations of theatergoers.
The live experience is nothing short of spectacular, anchored by the iconic Christmas tree that grows from 12 feet to over 40 feet before your eyes—a piece of stagecraft that still draws gasps from audiences who know exactly when it's coming. All 90 professional dancers, 125 children from the School of American Ballet, and a 62-piece live orchestra fill the David H. Koch Theater with a scale and grandeur that no recording can replicate. From the Battle of the Mice to the Sugarplum Fairy's ethereal pas de deux, this is a production where every detail—the swirling snow, the glittering confections, the luminous costumes—transports you completely into Marie's dreamlike journey.
The 2026–27 engagement runs from November 27 through January 3, with performances taking place at the Philip Johnson-designed David H. Koch Theater, a venue built specifically for dance with exceptional sightlines from every seat. This season also includes a Sensory Friendly Performance on January 3, featuring adjusted lighting, relaxed house policies, and designated break areas so more families can experience the magic. Whether you're introducing a child to ballet for the first time or continuing a decades-long tradition, this is the Nutcracker that started it all—and the one that still sets the standard.
George Balanchine's The Nutcracker is a beloved holiday ballet based on E.T.A. Hoffmann's story "The Nutcracker and the Mouse King," set to Tchaikovsky's iconic score. The story follows young Clara, who receives a nutcracker as a Christmas gift and embarks on a magical adventure to the Land of Sweets after the nutcracker comes to life and defeats the Mouse King. Audiences are treated to dazzling dance performances, spectacular sets and costumes, and a live orchestra — all combining to create one of the most cherished holiday traditions in American ballet.
George Balanchine's The Nutcracker is performed by New York City Ballet at the David H. Koch Theater, located at 20 Lincoln Center in New York City. The 2026 run at the Koch Theater goes from November 27, 2026 through January 2, 2027, making it one of the most celebrated and longest-running holiday engagements in the country.
George Balanchine's The Nutcracker is being presented by several major companies across the country during the 2026 holiday season. New York City Ballet performs it at the David H. Koch Theater in New York from November 27, 2026 through January 2, 2027, while Pacific Northwest Ballet brings it to McCaw Hall in Seattle from November 27 through December 27, 2026. George Balanchine's The Nutcracker is a distinct choreographic vision that Balanchine created for New York City Ballet, first staged in 1954, and it remains one of the most authoritative interpretations of the ballet in the world. Licensed through The George Balanchine Trust, productions that carry this title must faithfully adhere to Balanchine's original choreography, staging, and style, setting it apart from the many regional or freely adapted versions of The Nutcracker. The result is a rigorous, neoclassical production that prioritizes pure dance and is considered a gold standard in American ballet.
George Balanchine's The Nutcracker is widely considered one of the best introductions to live ballet for young audiences and is recommended for ages 5 and up. All patrons, including small children sitting in laps, must have a ticket to enter the theater. The production's vivid storytelling, spectacular costumes, and Tchaikovsky's memorable score make it an engaging and accessible experience for the whole family during the holiday season.
Yes, several companies presenting George Balanchine's The Nutcracker in 2026 are offering sensory-friendly or relaxed performances for audiences who benefit from a more welcoming environment. Philadelphia Ballet includes a sensory-friendly performance in its December 2026 run, and Pacific Northwest Ballet at McCaw Hall in Seattle is offering a Relaxed Performance on December 11, 2026. These specially adapted showings are designed to be more accommodating for attendees with autism, sensory processing differences, or other accessibility needs.
George Balanchine's The Nutcracker features several unforgettable sequences that audiences return to year after year. The battle scene between the Nutcracker and the Mouse King, the magical snowflake waltz that closes Act One, and the grand pas de deux between the Sugar Plum Fairy and her Cavalier in Act Two are among the most celebrated passages in the ballet. The Kingdom of Sweets divertissements — including the dances of Coffee, Tea, Candy Canes, and Marzipan — showcase Balanchine's choreographic brilliance set against Tchaikovsky's iconic score.
Yes, productions of George Balanchine's The Nutcracker are performed with a live orchestra, which is a hallmark of the experience. Pacific Northwest Ballet, for example, features the PNB Orchestra performing Tchaikovsky's beloved score, and New York City Ballet likewise presents the production with full orchestral accompaniment. The live music is considered an essential part of what makes this production so emotionally resonant and distinct from recorded versions.
