About the Peach Bowl
The Peach Bowl is a major college football bowl game that originated on December 30, 1968, in Atlanta, Georgia. Initially established to benefit the Lions Club of Atlanta and later taken over by the Atlanta Chamber of Commerce, the game was created to showcase Southern football talent. The Peach Bowl has grown in prestige over the decades and is now part of the College Football Playoff (CFP) system as one of the "New Year's Six" bowl games. It has a rotating role in hosting CFP semifinal matchups, further solidifying its place among the sport's most significant postseason events.
In its early years, the Peach Bowl struggled financially and was often seen as a lower-tier bowl game. However, by the 1990s, sponsorship from companies like Chick-fil-A helped elevate its prominence. In 2014, the game was officially renamed the Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl, reflecting its partnership with the Atlanta-based fast-food chain. The move into the New Year's Six and the high-profile matchups it now attracts have transformed the Peach Bowl into one of the premier college football games.
One of the most notable moments in Peach Bowl history came in 2016, when it hosted a CFP semifinal between Alabama and Washington. Alabama's dominant defense stifled Washington in a 24-7 victory, showcasing the Crimson Tide's national championship pedigree. Another unforgettable game was the 2006 matchup between Georgia and Virginia Tech. Georgia overcame a 21-point deficit to win 31-24, marking one of the largest comebacks in the bowl's history. More recently, the 2019 Peach Bowl featured an explosive LSU team, led by Heisman Trophy winner Joe Burrow, dismantling Oklahoma 63-28 on their way to a national title.
The Peach Bowl’s evolution from a struggling regional game to a marquee event highlights its importance in college football. Played at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta since 2017, the game now enjoys state-of-the-art facilities and a reputation for hosting competitive matchups. Its role in the CFP system, along with its commitment to community initiatives and charitable giving, has cemented the Peach Bowl as a cherished tradition in college football's postseason landscape.
