About Rush Tickets
Rush formed in 1968 in the Willowdale neighbourhood of Toronto, Ontario. The founders were guitarist Alex Lifeson, drummer John Rutsey, and bassist/vocalist Jeff Jones. Very soon Jeff Jones was replaced by Gary “Geddy” Lee, who became the lead vocalist and bassist. Early on they played local gigs, often high-school shows, cover material (inspired by bands like Cream, Led Zeppelin, etc.), gradually building their skill and stage chops. To release their music independently, they started their own label, Moon Records, and in 1974 released their debut album, Rush. Soon after the release of that album, original drummer John Rutsey left the band (health issues among them), and was replaced by Neil Peart, who also became their primary lyricist. This lineup — Geddy Lee, Alex Lifeson, Neil Peart — would become the classic core of Rush.
Over their multi-decade career, Rush became known for complex compositions, technical proficiency, and evolving musical styles. Their early work in the mid-1970s featured long songs, intricate instrumentals, conceptual themes, and progressive rock ambitions. Albums such as 2112 (1976) were milestones, where the band embraced longer suite-style tracks and science fiction/fantasy lyric themes. As they transitioned into the 1980s, albums like Permanent Waves and Moving Pictures brought them broader commercial success, with more concise songwriting, and songs like “Tom Sawyer,” “Limelight,” and “The Spirit of Radio” becoming staples on rock radio. They experimented with synthesizers in that period, integrating them without losing their instrumental identity.
Rush’s later years were marked by both resilience and recognition. After a difficult personal period for Neil Peart (tragedies in his family) and periods of less activity, they returned with albums like Vapor Trails (2002), and then Clockwork Angels (2012), which would be their final studio album. They toured extensively, building one of rock’s most loyal fanbases. Among their many honors: they were inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2013; they were made Officers of the Order of Canada; they have multiple gold, platinum, and multi-platinum albums; and their music continues to be celebrated for its influence on progressive rock, heavy metal, and many later artists.
