Kaytranada—born Louis Kevin Celestin on August 25, 1992, in Port‑au‑Prince, Haiti, and raised in Montreal—is a self-taught DJ and producer who emerged in the early 2010s under the alias Kaytradamus by posting remixes and beat tapes on SoundCloud. He began honing his craft in a basement bedroom, reverse‑engineering J Dilla‑style beats and reworking tracks by artists like Janet Jackson and Common. His remix of Janet Jackson’s “If” went viral around 2013, helping him gain traction, and led to his first major label signing with XL Recordings in 2014.
Kaytranada’s debut studio album 99.9% dropped in May 2016 and instantly garnered critical acclaim for its genre-blending mix of electronic, hip hop, R&B and disco, featuring collaborators like Vic Mensa, Anderson .Paak, Craig David and Syd. The album won the prestigious 2016 Polaris Music Prize—a rare feat for a hip‑hop album—and earned a Juno Award for Electronic Album of the Year in 2017.
His sophomore album Bubba, released in December 2019 via RCA, further established his distinct sound and bold artistic identity. It featured standout tracks like “10%” with Kali Uchis and “Midsection” with Pharrell, blending funk, soul and dance influences. In 2021, Kaytranada became the first Black and openly gay producer to win a Grammy for Best Dance/Electronic Album (for Bubba) and snagged Best Dance Recording for “10%."
Most recently, Kaytranada released his third album, Timeless, on June 7, 2024. This expansive double album features an all-star roster—including Childish Gambino, Anderson .Paak, Tinashe, Thundercat, and PinkPantheress—and received a Grammy nomination for Best Dance/Electronic Album. Following its release, he co-headlined a 13-date North American tour with French electro duo Justice, beginning October 16 in Vancouver and wrapping on November 8 at Brooklyn’s Barclays Center, playing major cities like Seattle, Chicago, Denver and Phoenix.
Through his fusion of danceable grooves, cross-genre collaborations, and his role as a visible Black queer artist in electronic music, Kaytranada has become one of the most innovative and influential producers of his generation.
