NCAA tournament 2026: National semifinal ticket demand soars as Illinois dominates sales

Two Big Ten teams are headed to the national semifinals, with the conference seeking its first men’s basketball title since 2000. With this year’s event at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis, squarely in the heart of Big Ten country, the result is a ticket market with real juice.

That demand is showing up in the price. The average resale ticket price for this year’s national semifinals on SeatGeek is $1,055.88, a sharp jump from last year’s $657.62, with a lot of that interest tied to an Illinois fan base that had been waiting a long time for another major NCAA tournament run.

Illinois dominating ticket share for 2026 national semifinals in Indianapolis

Illinois has been the clear driver of demand for this year’s national semifinals.

Since Saturday, March 28, Illinois has accounted for 48% of all national semifinals ticket purchases on SeatGeek, easily the largest share of any state and nearly as much as every other state combined. Michigan is a distant second at 7%, while Arizona and Indiana each sit at 5%. Connecticut, despite UConn earning a trip to Indianapolis, ranks just 13th at 1%.

After waiting more than two decades for another national semifinal appearance, a hungry Illini fan base finally has its long-awaited moment, with Indianapolis just an easy trip away. The Wolverines are playing a role in that Illinois-driven momentum, too, drawing from a broader Midwest alumni and fan footprint that stretches into Chicago and across Illinois. Looking at the cities driving national semifinals ticket sales, Chicago ranks No. 1 at 24%, followed by the Champaign & Springfield-Decatur area at 11%.

“The national semifinals is always one of the most electric weekends in college sports, and this year’s matchup in Indianapolis is already generating extraordinary demand,” said Chris Leyden, SeatGeek’s Senior Director of Category Marketing + Endorser Marketing. “Illini fans have long been a sleeping giant in college basketball — one of the biggest fan bases in the country — and now that they’re back on the national semifinals stage for the first time in 21 years, they’re making the trip in force.”

How 2026 national semifinals ticket prices compare to previous years

The buzz around Indianapolis is showing up on the resale market too.

The average resale ticket price for a 2026 national semifinals session ticket on SeatGeek is $1,055.88. Fans typically buy NCAA tournament tickets in multi-game sessions, and for the national semifinals, that means admission to both games on Saturday.

Only one recent national semifinals posted a higher average purchase price: 2021 in Indianapolis. That year deserves an asterisk, though, since limited crowd capacity during the COVID-19 pandemic pushed the average to $1,474.07. Outside of that unique year, 2026 stands as the most in-demand national semifinals in this recent stretch.

Here’s how 2026 compares with the previous five tournaments:

  • 2026: $1,055.88

  • 2025: $657.62

  • 2024: $819.94

  • 2023: $423.23

  • 2022: $805.78

  • 2021: $1,474.07*

That makes this year’s average purchase price 61% higher than 2025, when Houston’s presence helped drive interest in San Antonio. It is also comfortably ahead of 2024, 2023 and 2022, with the latter involving a historic Duke vs. North Carolina matchup in New Orleans.

The national semifinals are always a major event, but ticket demand does not rise on name alone. It swings with the teams, the matchups and the location. This year, with Illinois and Michigan both landing in Indianapolis, the resale market has responded accordingly.
