About Erykah Badu Tickets
Erykah Badu—born Erica Abi Wright on February 26, 1971, in Dallas, Texas—grew up immersed in the arts, studying theater, dance and vocal performance from a young age at Booker T. Washington High School for the Performing and Visual Arts and later at Grambling State University. She began performing professionally in the mid-1990s with her cousin in the group Erykah Free, delivering demos like “Apple Tree” and “On & On” that led to her being discovered at South by Southwest by Kedar Massenburg. He signed her to Kedar Entertainment, where she embraced her new stage name—symbolizing spiritual freedom—and began crafting her unique soul-jazz-hip-hop fusion voice.
In February 1997, she released her debut album Baduizm, which quickly became a triple-platinum smash and won her Grammy Awards for Best R&B Album and Best Female R&B Vocal Performance. The album's introspective hooks—led by singles like “On & On”—marked her as a central figure in the neo-soul movement, often compared to Billie Holiday in vocal presence. Her follow-up live EP included the now-iconic track “Tyrone,” further solidifying her reputation for electrifying performances and candid songwriting rooted in emotional realism.
Over the years, Badu continued to evolve both sonically and socially: her 2000 album Mama’s Gun, featuring “Bag Lady,” offered raw self-examination and became a Platinum-certified classic; Worldwide Underground (2003) reflected her experimental edge, spawning “Love of My Life (An Ode to Hip-Hop),” which earned a Grammy in 2003. Her later albums—New Amerykah Part One (2008) and Return of the Ankh (2010)—posed politically charged, jazz-infused statements that tackled identity, love and resistance, with “Window Seat” —a video filmed in Dallas’s Dealey Plaza—sparking public discourse. In 2025, she won her fifth Grammy for Best Melodic Rap Performance with Rapsody on “3:AM,” marking her first Grammy win in over two decades.
