The playoffs feature quarterfinals, semifinals and the championship final in a single-elimination format:
Quarterfinals: Hosted by the higher-seeded teams.
Semifinals: Winners advance, with matchups determined by seeding.
Final: Winners of the semifinals meet for the championship at a neutral site (PayPal Park).
This format leaves room for upsets. Historically, only twice in the last five seasons has the No. 1 seed won both the Shield (best team during the regular season) and the championship, so anything can happen.
Since the NWSL playoffs are a single-elimination format, if any game is tied after regulation and two 15-minute extra time periods, a penalty shootout will determine the winner. The shootout format involves rounds of best-of-five kicks, with additional rounds played as needed until a winner is decided.
Among the final eight teams, here are some notable storylines for this year's playoff field.
Kansas City Current Kansas City dominated the regular season, finishing in first place with a 21-2-3 record. With a balanced squad and strong depth, the Current are poised to make a serious run at their first NWSL Championship, though injuries to key players could be a factor.
Orlando Pride The defending champions enter the playoffs with confidence and experience. After claiming the 2024 NWSL Championship, Orlando knows what it takes to go all the way and will be looking to defend their title.
Portland Thorns FC Portland is the most successful club in NWSL history, with three championships (2013, 2017 and 2022). Their mix of seasoned veterans and emerging stars makes them a perennial contender and one of the most dangerous teams in knockout games.
Racing Louisville FC Making their first playoff appearance, Racing Louisville is one of the season’s most intriguing stories. They’ll be looking to ride momentum and prove they can compete with the league’s established powerhouses.
Gotham FC Gotham is an intriguing underdog even as the No. 8 seed. With championship pedigree from their 2023 title and talented players capable of individual brilliance, they could pull off a surprise run in the playoffs.
SeatGeek is the official ticketing partner of the Kansas City Current, Portland Thorns and Racing Louisville FC. Fans can buy verified tickets directly through SeatGeek for their playoff matches to ensure a smooth, secure ticketing experience from start to finish.
With stars all over the pitch during the NWSL playoffs, here are five to key in on that have made a major impact this season.
Lorena – Kansas City Current Lorena has been a wall in goal for the Current all season, keeping her team in games with remarkable saves and composure under pressure. With Golden Boot winner Temwa Chawinga sidelined due to a hip injury, Lorena will be key in keeping Kansas City competitive, providing stability at the back, and giving the team a chance to advance deep into the playoffs.
Trinity Rodman – Washington Spirit Rodman’s speed and attacking prowess make her one of the league’s most dangerous forwards, though she is likely out for the quarterfinals due to a knee injury. Her return later in the playoffs could swing momentum for the Spirit.
Delphine Cascarino – San Diego Wave Cascarino has been a creative force for the Wave all season, as she tied for the NWSL lead in assists. Her ability to command attention from defenders and generate opportunities for the Wave makes her a constant threat in the playoffs.
Olivia Moultrie – Portland Thorns The 20-year-old Moultrie has emerged as the Thorns’ most dangerous attacking player, dazzling with goals from open play and set pieces. The midfielder has become a dynamic playmaker capable of deciding high-pressure knockout games.
Esther González – Gotham FC González finished second in the NWSL this season with 13 goals and is Gotham’s primary scoring threat. If she can stay hot and avoid injury, González could single-handedly propel Gotham to a shocking playoff upset.
