The reigning Olympic champion U.S. Women’s National Team is returning to the field this October for two major international friendlies against Spain, the defending Women’s World Cup champion and No. 1 team in the FIFA women’s rankings.
The USWNT will host Spain at Audi Field in Washington, D.C. on Saturday, October 10 before the teams meet again at Subaru Park in Chester, Pennsylvania on Tuesday, October 13. The series brings together the two highest-ranked women’s national teams in the world and gives U.S. head coach Emma Hayes two high-level tests immediately before World Cup qualifying begins.
With the 2027 Women’s World Cup scheduled for June 24 through July 25 in Brazil, these matches will offer an early look at how the United States could approach the tournament. They will also help Hayes evaluate lineups, roles and tactical combinations before the USWNT must officially secure its place in the field.
The two friendlies will take place three days apart at soccer-specific stadiums on the East Coast. The Washington match will be played on a Saturday afternoon, while the Philadelphia-area match is scheduled for Tuesday evening.
Date | Matchup | Venue | Location | Kickoff time |
USWNT vs. Spain | Washington, D.C. | 2:30 p.m. ET | ||
USWNT vs. Spain | Chester, Pennsylvania | 7 p.m. ET |
These two October matches are more than high-profile friendlies. They will give fans an early look at how the USWNT is shaping its lineup, building chemistry and preparing for the road to the 2027 Women’s World Cup.
Although these are officially international friendlies, they arrive at an important point in the United States’ path toward the 2027 Women’s World Cup.
The USWNT will begin its World Cup qualification campaign against El Salvador in the quarterfinals of the 2026 Concacaf W Championship, which runs from November 27 through December 5 in Texas. A quarterfinal victory would secure an automatic place in the 2027 Women’s World Cup, while a loss would send the United States into a Play-In match for a place in FIFA’s intercontinental playoff tournament.
The October roster will not necessarily be the final group that travels to Brazil in 2027. However, strong performances against Spain could carry considerable weight.
Spain enters the series as the defending Women’s World Cup champion and the No. 1 team in FIFA’s June 2026 rankings. The United States is ranked No. 2, making this a rare meeting between the top two teams in the world.
Spain qualified directly for the 2027 Women’s World Cup after finishing first in its UEFA group. La Roja collected 15 points from six qualifying matches and clinched its place with decisive wins over England and Iceland.
The Spanish player pool includes several of the sport’s most accomplished and technically gifted players. Aitana Bonmatí has won three consecutive world player of the year honors, while Alexia Putellas won the award in 2021 and 2022. Spain can also turn to Mariona Caldentey, Salma Paralluelo, Vicky López, Patri Guijarro and Clàudia Pina.
Spain’s ability to control possession, create overloads in midfield and punish defensive mistakes should force the United States to make quicker decisions than it would against a less aggressive opponent. That is exactly the type of pressure the USWNT will need to handle during World Cup qualifying and potentially in the later rounds of the 2027 tournament.
The United States and Spain have met only four times at the senior level. The USWNT won the first three meetings, including a 2-1 victory in the Round of 16 at the 2019 Women’s World Cup and a 1-0 win at the 2020 SheBelieves Cup.
Spain earned its first victory in the series in October 2022, defeating the United States 2-0 in Pamplona. Spain went on to win its first Women’s World Cup title the following year, beating England 1-0 in the 2023 Final.
The October games will be only the second and third meetings between the teams on U.S. soil. They will also be the 18th and 19th USWNT matches featuring the top two teams in the FIFA rankings. The United States is unbeaten in its previous 17 No. 1-versus-No. 2 matchups, with 11 wins and six draws.
The October roster and starting lineups have not yet been announced. National team coaches commonly rotate players during two-game international windows, so fans should not assume the same starting 11 will appear in Washington and Chester.
The short turnaround should give the USWNT an opportunity to test multiple combinations while still treating both matches as serious preparation for World Cup qualifying.
The first match will take place at Audi Field, home of the NWSL’s Washington Spirit and MLS’ D.C. United. It will be the USWNT’s fourth appearance at the venue and its 14th match overall in Washington, D.C.
The afternoon will also include a pregame ceremony honoring retired USWNT defender Crystal Dunn. Dunn played for the Washington Spirit earlier in her career and was named NWSL MVP in 2015. The first 2,000 fans through the gates will receive a special-edition Crystal Dunn commemorative bobblehead.
Because the giveaway is limited and the ceremony will take place before kickoff, fans hoping to see the full tribute should plan to arrive well before the 2:30 p.m. ET start.
The second match will be played at Subaru Park, home of the Philadelphia Union, in Chester, Pennsylvania.
This will be the USWNT’s 10th match at the stadium. The United States went unbeaten in its first nine appearances there before falling 2-1 to Portugal in October 2025.
The 7 p.m. ET kickoff gives fans in the Philadelphia area an opportunity to see the reigning Olympic champion and defending world champion under the lights.
