The NWSL playoff bracket is already finalized, while MLS teams still have one regular-season game remaining to determine the final standings and postseason matchups.

How do the MLS and NWSL playoffs work?

Both leagues will eventually crown a champion through elimination matches, but they take different paths to get there. The biggest differences involve the number of teams, the opening rounds and what happens when a match ends in a tie.

2026 MLS Cup Playoffs format

The MLS Cup Playoffs feature 18 teams, with the top nine clubs from the Eastern and Western Conferences qualifying.

The postseason consists of five stages:

  1. Wild Card matches: The No. 8 and No. 9 seeds in each conference meet in a single-elimination match on November 18. The winners advance to face their conference's No. 1 seed.

  2. Round One: The remaining 16 teams compete in best-of-three series. The first team to win two matches advances, with the higher seed hosting Games 1 and 3 (if necessary).

  3. Conference semifinals: The eight surviving clubs compete in single-elimination matches.

  4. Conference finals: The final two teams in each conference meet, with the winners advancing to MLS Cup.

  5. MLS Cup: The Eastern and Western Conference champions face off on December 18, with the team holding the better regular-season record hosting the championship.

What happens if an MLS playoff match ends in a tie?

This is where things get interesting.

During the Wild Card round and best-of-three series, matches tied after 90 minutes go directly to a penalty shootout. There's no extra time, and every match must produce a winner.

Beginning with the conference semifinals, tied matches go to 30 minutes of extra time, consisting of two 15-minute periods. If the score remains tied, a penalty shootout determines which team advances.

There are also no aggregate scores in the best-of-three series. Each match counts as one victory, regardless of the score differential.

2026 NWSL Playoffs format

The NWSL postseason is more straightforward, but there's even less room for error.

The top eight teams from the regular-season standings qualify for a single-elimination tournament. There are no best-of-three series or second chances.

The format consists of three rounds:

  1. Quarterfinals: The No. 1 seed hosts No. 8, No. 2 hosts No. 7, No. 3 hosts No. 6, and No. 4 hosts No. 5.

  2. Semifinals: The four quarterfinal winners advance, with the higher-seeded teams hosting their respective matches.

  3. NWSL Championship: The two semifinal winners meet in the championship match on Saturday, November 21, at Audi Field in Washington, D.C.

What happens if an NWSL playoff match ends in a tie?

Every NWSL postseason match follows the same rules.

If the score is tied after 90 minutes, the teams play two 15-minute extra-time periods. If neither team has won after the additional 30 minutes, the match goes to a penalty shootout.

Few experiences in sports are more nerve-wracking than watching your team's season come down to penalty kicks.

Biggest storylines to watch in the 2026 MLS Cup Playoffs

There's one name who's bound to dominate the headlines, but this year's MLS Cup Playoffs have plenty more to offer.

Can Lionel Messi lead Inter Miami to another MLS Cup?

The 39-year-old legend announced his retirement from international soccer following Argentina's heartbreaking loss to Spain in the 2026 World Cup Final, raising questions about how much longer fans will get to watch one of the greatest players of all time.

Messi isn't done just yet, though. He's under contract with Inter Miami through 2028 and has another opportunity to add to his remarkable trophy collection.

After leading Miami to its first MLS Cup championship in 2025, Messi and his teammates enter November looking to defend their title. Repeating won't be easy, though.

Inter Miami must navigate a competitive Eastern Conference that includes Supporters' Shield winner Nashville SC and several other dangerous contenders.

Can Nashville SC turn its historic season into an MLS Cup championship?

Nashville SC has already made history in 2026.

The club captured its first Supporters' Shield, awarded to the team with the best regular-season record, and secured the Eastern Conference's No. 1 playoff seed.

That gives Nashville home-field advantage throughout its postseason run, including the MLS Cup if it reaches the championship.

But regular-season dominance doesn't guarantee postseason success, especially in soccer.

Nashville will face the winner of the Eastern Conference Wild Card match in the opening round, and the pressure will be on to turn an outstanding season into the club's first MLS Cup title.

One fun note for next season is that SeatGeek will be an Official Ticketing Partner of Nashville SC.

Can Thomas Müller lead Vancouver Whitecaps to MLS Cup redemption?

The Vancouver Whitecaps came agonizingly close to winning their first MLS Cup in 2025, only to fall 3-1 to Lionel Messi and Inter Miami in the championship match.

Now, the German legend and his teammates have a chance to finish what they started.

Vancouver has clinched the Western Conference's No. 1 seed for the first time in club history, securing home-field advantage throughout the conference playoffs.

Müller has played a major role in Vancouver's rise since arriving from Bayern Munich in 2025, bringing decades of championship experience and helping transform the club into one of MLS's top contenders.

Alongside leading scorer Brian White and a defense that's been among the league's best, Müller has Vancouver dreaming of another trip to MLS Cup.

Biggest storylines to watch in the 2026 NWSL Playoffs

There's plenty of excitement surrounding the 2026 NWSL Playoffs, especially with some fascinating opening-round matchups on the schedule.

From defending champion Gotham FC just capturing its first NWSL Shield to SeatGeek partner Utah Royals FC preparing for its first-ever playoff appearance, there's no shortage of intriguing narratives.

Can Gotham FC complete the double and defend its NWSL title?

Gotham FC has already made history this season, but the club has its sights set on an even bigger prize.

After defeating Utah Royals FC 2-0 on November 1, Gotham secured its first-ever NWSL Shield, finishing atop the regular-season standings with 61 points.

Now, the defending NWSL champion has an opportunity to win both the Shield and the championship in the same season, a feat accomplished only three times in league history.

What's particularly interesting is how Gotham's position has changed. The club won its 2023 and 2025 championships as the lowest-seeded team in the playoffs. This time, it enters as the No. 1 seed and its path to another title begins against a familiar opponent.

Gotham hosts No. 8 Seattle Reign FC on November 8 in a rematch of the 2023 NWSL Championship, which Gotham won 2-1 (against the then-OL Reign) to capture its first league title.

Trinity Rodman and Sophia Wilson battle again

Two of the biggest stars of the United States women's national team are about to meet with their seasons on the line.

Trinity Rodman and the No. 3 Washington Spirit host Sophia Wilson and the No. 6 Portland Thorns on Sunday, November 8, in a rematch of last year's NWSL semifinals.

Washington won that encounter 2-0 at Audi Field, ending Portland's championship hopes.

But the Thorns got some revenge when the teams met again to open the 2026 regular season and stunned Washington 1-0 in front of a sold-out crowd.

Now, the two clubs are heading back to the same stadium for a winner-take-all showdown.

Both stars already have an NWSL Championship to their names, with Rodman helping Washington win in 2021 and Wilson leading Portland to the title in 2022. Now, they're chasing a second trophy, but only one will keep that dream alive after Sunday.

Can Kansas City Current avoid another home playoff loss against red-hot Angel City?

No team has been as dominant at home as Kansas City Current.

The SeatGeek partner club went undefeated at CPKC Stadium during the 2026 regular season, posting an 11-0-4 record and extending its remarkable regular-season home unbeaten streak to 32 matches.

But there's one home defeat Kansas City would love to forget.

Last year, the Current won the NWSL Shield and entered the postseason as the No. 1 seed, only to suffer a stunning 2-1 extra-time loss to No. 8 Gotham FC in the quarterfinals at CPKC Stadium.

Kansas City now has an opportunity to avenge last season’s disappointment, but its opening-round opponent has been extremely dangerous of late.

No. 5 Angel City FC enters the playoffs riding a 10-match unbeaten streak, becoming just the second team in NWSL history to reach the postseason without a loss in its final 10 games.

So will Kansas City's home dominance translate into a postseason victory, or will Angel City deliver another upset at CPKC Stadium?
