The Ducks joined the NHL in 1993 and made the playoffs for the first time in 1997. In their first playoff appearance, the Ducks — then called the Mighty Ducks — defeated the Phoenix Coyotes in the first round before losing to the 90s powerhouse Detroit Red Wings.

In 2003, the Mighty Ducks, led by Paul Kariya, went on a surprising playoff run. After finishing seventh in the Western Conference during the season, the Ducks upset the defending-champion Detroit Red Wings in the first round. Paul Kariya set the tone for the series when he scored in triple overtime of Game 1. The Ducks went on to win all four games of the series by just one goal. Later, in the Western Conference Final, the Mighty Ducks swept the Minnesota Wild. Ducks goalie Jean-Sebastien Giguere had one of the most dominant playoff series of all time: he recorded three shutouts, and the Wild scored just one goal in the entire series. The Mighty Ducks advanced to the Stanley Cup Final but lost in seven games to the New Jersey Devils. Even though Anaheim lost the series, Giguere was awarded the Conn Smythe Trophy as playoff MVP.

In 2007, the Ducks made another noteworthy playoff run. The new-look team had added Chris Pronger and Scott Niedermayer to their defense and was also supported by a resurgent Teemu Selanne and young stars like Ryan Getzlaf and Corey Perry. The Ducks reached the Stanley Cup Final and played the Ottawa Senators. Anaheim defeated the Sens in five games to capture the franchise’s first Stanley Cup. Anaheim’s championship win also marked the first time the Stanley Cup was awarded to a team from California.

NHL Playoff Format

The NHL is split into an Eastern Conference and a Western Conference. Both conferences are made up of two divisions. The Ducks play in the Pacific Division of the Western Conference.
