King Kong on Broadway is a musical based on the hit 1933 science fiction and thriller film. In fact, King Kong has been ranked by Rotten Tomatoes as the greatest horror film of all time. Written by Jack Thorne, the Olivier Award-winning writer of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, the play is based on the film which follows a young actress named Ann Darrow and a filmmaker, Carl Denham, as they navigate the streets of 1930s New York. The pair soon ends up on Skull Island where they come face to face with Kong himself. From there, the movie is a mix of love and terror. King Kong gives audiences a unique glimpse into the soul of a perceived monster. The show itself brings the incredible 20-foot-tall, 2,000-pound beast to life through an impressive mix of animatronics and puppetry. Despite the animal’s gigantic size, he moves around the stage with the help of several onstage performers. Kong’s striking eyes are the blackest of black and have been called the “most powerful” part about the creature. While Kong doesn’t speak, he growls, moans, cries, and even sneezes at times throughout the show. The original musical received a variety of Helpmann Awards, which are accolades for live entertainment and performing arts in Australia. The show won awards for Best Costume Design, Best Lighting Design, and several more. In fact, the Industry Awards Panel and Helpmann Awards Administration Committee created an entirely new Outstanding Theatrical Achievement Award for the “design, creation, and operation of King Kong – the creature. ” This show is unlike any other and is sure to leave audience members reeling from a variety of emotions.
