Perched on Syracuse University’s campus in New York, the JMA Wireless Dome—affectionately known as The Dome or “The Loud House”—is the crown jewel of college athletics venues. Since its opening in 1980, it’s been the home turf for Syracuse Orange football, men’s and women’s basketball and lacrosse, while also hosting major concerts and national sporting events.

About JMA Wireless Dome

  • Location: 900 Irving Avenue, Syracuse, NY

  • Opened: September 20, 1980

  • Capacity: ~42,800 for football; ~33,000 for basketball; up to ~56,000 for concerts

  • Owner: Syracuse University

  • Surface: FieldTurf (since 2005), upgraded in 2022; replaced inflatable roof with translucent fixed roof

Originally named the Carrier Dome, the venue was rebranded JMA Wireless Dome in May 2022 under a 10-year naming-rights deal, marking the first name change in its 40+ year history.

History & Legacy

Built to replace outdated Archbold Stadium, the Dome became a national landmark with its massive air-supported roof. It earned the nickname “The Loud House” early on due to the echo-amplified crowd noise.

Key moments & milestones:

  • Hosted NCAA East Regional basketball rounds numerous times (e.g., 1983, 1997, 2000, 2002, 2005, 2010, 2015)

  • Venue for Big East Conference tournaments and multiple lacrosse title games

  • Hosted boxing (Sugar Ray Leonard vs. Larry Bonds, 1981), NFL preseason games, WWE, Monster Jam and more

The $118 million renovation completed by 2022 replaced the inflatable roof with a fixed translucent version, added air conditioning, upgraded video boards, seating and digital infrastructure—including 5G connectivity.

Getting to the Dome

By Public Transit: CENTRO buses and event shuttles serve the campus directly. The former Orange Express rail shuttle ran to the old Carrier Dome station (service ended 2008).

By Car/Rideshare: Campus roads near Irving Ave offer drop-off and rideshare zones. Street parking in Eastside neighborhoods is free—just watch for signage, especially in winter.

Walking/Biking: Located in Syracuse’s University Hill neighborhood, surrounding corridors are walkable. Bike racks are available inside the campus perimeter.

Seating at the Dome

The Dome’s design keeps fans close to the action regardless of event type:

  • Field/Floor Seats (concerts): Reserved or GA options provide views close to the stage; configurations vary per performance

  • 200 Level (Club): Offers elevation, comfort and access to premium concessions

  • 100 Lower Bowl: Sideline seats ideal for football and basketball

  • 300 Upper Bowl: Economical with excellent overhead views

  • Upgraded Choices: Local and regional vendors, some serving Syracuse favorites

  • Premium Options: Club and suite areas feature enhanced menus, cocktails and lounge access

Wi-Fi and connectivity upgrades also make mobile ordering easier during events.

The Dome’s tight architecture and the acoustics of its fixed roof make it one of the loudest venues in college sports:

  • Football Games: Deep orange and packed stands, especially for rivalry games (e.g., vs. Pittsburgh)

  • Basketball Events: Big East matchups and packed crowds make it among the largest on-campus basketball venues (~35,600 record attendance)

  • Lacrosse: Home to nationally ranked Syracuse lacrosse with consistent sellouts

  • Concerts: Hosts massive shows—Frank Sinatra, U2, Elton John, Garth Brooks, Billy Joel, Taylor Swift, Prince and more

The returning Dome also serves community functions—graduation ceremonies, esports tournaments and even held classes during the pandemic.

Policies & Access

  • Bag Policy: Small bags permitted; all bags searched. Re-entry is not allowed—even during events—due to smoke-free campus rules

  • Mobile Tickets: Recommended for most events; paper tickets may not be accepted

  • Cashless Payments: Concessions and retail largely cash-free

  • Fan Conduct: Standing encouraged in certain zones (e.g. student sections) but should not disrupt neighboring seats
