Set along the banks of the Allegheny River with sweeping views of downtown Pittsburgh, Acrisure Stadium is one of the premier outdoor venues in the country. Opened in 2001 as Heinz Field and renamed in 2022, it’s best known as the home of the Pittsburgh Steelers (NFL) and the University of Pittsburgh Panthers football team. With its mix of modern amenities, iconic design and electric game-day atmosphere, Acrisure Stadium is not only a football haven but also a destination for concerts, special events and community gatherings.

About Acrisure Stadium

Address: 100 Art Rooney Ave, Pittsburgh, PA 15212

Acrisure Stadium has a seating capacity of around 68,400 for football games and can hold more for concerts, depending on stage setup. Its horseshoe-shaped design keeps fans close to the action, while open end zones provide breathtaking views of the Pittsburgh skyline and rivers.

Beyond football, the stadium has hosted everything from soccer friendlies and hockey’s Winter Classic to world-class concerts by stars like Beyoncé, Kenny Chesney and Taylor Swift.

A Look Back at Acrisure Stadium’s History

The stadium officially opened on August 18, 2001, replacing the old Three Rivers Stadium. Its construction was part of a major redevelopment effort on Pittsburgh’s North Shore, which also included PNC Park (home of the Pirates).

For more than two decades, it was known as Heinz Field, a name beloved by fans thanks to Pittsburgh’s connection to Heinz Ketchup. In 2022, the naming rights transitioned to Acrisure, a Michigan-based fintech company, sparking passionate debate among locals but ultimately cementing a new era for the stadium.

Since its opening, Acrisure Stadium has been the stage for AFC Championships, college football thrillers and unforgettable concerts. Highlights include the Steelers’ Super Bowl runs of the 2000s, Pitt’s dramatic rivalry games, and U2’s massive 360° Tour stop in 2011.

How to Get to Acrisure Stadium

Driving: The stadium is located on Pittsburgh’s North Shore, just across the river from downtown. It’s easily accessible from major interstates like I-279, I-376, and Route 28. There are several official parking lots surrounding the venue, but spots can sell out quickly, especially for Steelers games.

Public Transit: One of the easiest ways to reach the stadium is via Pittsburgh’s “T” Light Rail, which runs free between downtown and the North Shore. Riders can get off at the North Shore Station, just steps from the venue.

Walking: Many fans choose to park downtown and walk across the Roberto Clemente Bridge or one of the other nearby bridges, turning game day into a scenic experience.

Rideshare: Uber and Lyft pick-up/drop-off zones are available in designated areas near the stadium to ease traffic flow.

Inside Acrisure Stadium

The atmosphere inside Acrisure Stadium is second to none, especially during Steelers games. The Terrible Towel wave has become a tradition, uniting fans in one of the most iconic rituals in sports. Seating ranges from lower-bowl sideline seats to affordable upper-deck options, all with excellent sightlines.

The stadium also offers premium seating, including club-level suites, the Champions Club and the North Club Lounge. These spaces provide upscale dining, comfortable seating and private entrances.

For concerts, stage setups often take advantage of the open end of the stadium, creating incredible skyline backdrops for fans in attendance.

Make the Most of Your Visit

Tailgating is a huge part of the Acrisure Stadium experience. Lots open several hours before games, and the North Shore transforms into a sea of black and gold. Fans set up grills, tents and music, creating a lively pre-game tradition that’s as much a part of Pittsburgh football as the game itself.

If you’re visiting from out of town, the North Shore also offers plenty to do before and after events. Nearby attractions include the Carnegie Science Center, Andy Warhol Museum and Stage AE, a popular concert venue. Sports fans can also walk next door to PNC Park, one of the most beautiful ballparks in Major League Baseball.

Acrisure Stadium’s Place in Pittsburgh’s Legacy

In just over 20 years, Acrisure Stadium has already become one of the city’s most iconic landmarks. From Super Bowl-winning seasons to unforgettable concerts, it continues to showcase Pittsburgh as a sports and cultural capital.
